First Baptist Church North

The First Baptist Church of Cushing, Oklahoma was organized in April 1920 and incorporated in June 1923, by the late Rev W. M. Thomas. The church building was finally located at 1001 North Central, with 15 members, of which all are now deceased. Rev Thomas serves as pastor until his death in 1950.

Assistant Pastor, Rev D.M. Jackson was called on April 6, 1951, and served through August 3, 1959. During this period, the choir stand, and pulpit area was remodeled and the church debt was paid off.

Rev Alex Hider was called as pastor in October 1959 and served until September 1962. Under his leadership, a baptismal pool was added to the church.

Rev Willie Miner was called as pastor on December 4, 1962. Under his leadership, the sanctuary ceiling was lowered to its present height; the building was remodeled, and the kitchen-dining room and restrooms were added to the west end of the building. Rev Miner resigned in June 1969.

On July 20, 1969, Rev. V. Otis accepted the pastorate. Under his ministry, the sanctuary was carpeted, and a number of members were added to the church. However, he resigned in November 1971, because of ill health.

Rev. Boisey Long became pastor January 6, 1972. Under his ministry, hymn books and choir robes were purchased. He resigned July 1973.

On the first Sunday of March 1974, Rev M.L. Smith accepted the pastorate. Under his leadership, we purchased new windows for the sanctuary, new pews, pulpit furniture, a public address system, central heat and air for the auditorium, two window air conditioners, double glass doors and a weather canopy for the front doors. We also purchased a new organ. The choir purchased new robes. Draperies for the windows were also purchased. All of these items are fully paid for.

Also, we were able to acquire the 105 feet of 4 lots north of this sanctuary. During those same years, the Lord also blessed us to save around $20,000. In May 1984, construction began on the new educational building and dining room facility, with Bro. Raymond Petties, Sr. serving as construction overseer. The church Trustees were Raymond Pouncil, Raymond Petties, Sr., Erma Davis and Velma Johnson. The financial secretary/treasurer was Deacon Leonard Tucker, Sr.

Included in this facility are two classrooms, a carpeted nursery, pastor's office, ladies, men's and nursery restrooms, a utility closet, a large kitchen and spacious dining room. Installations included two separate heat and air conditioning units, four ceiling fans and two attic ventilators. Some badly needed items were donated by friends and members of First Baptist, such as emergency back-up lighting, the oak door on the pastor's office, some furniture in the pastor's office, the water fountain and minister's table and chairs in the dining room, the steam table in the kitchen, many toys, books, teaching aides, the carpet, a baby crib for the nursery and students' desks for classrooms.

Donated to the auditorium were the pulpit chairs, the lectern, a settee, and enlarged picture of pastor, carpet for the front walk and all were donated by members. A plaque in memory of Sis Velma Johnson was bought and paid for by relatives, members, and friends of First Baptist. We entered the new building for service upon its completion on the first Sunday in November 1984. At that time, the facility was 50% paid off. Pastor Smith retired August 28, 1988.

On November 20, 1988, Rev James Manuel Jr. accepted the pastorate. He came to us as an associate minister of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Stillwater, Oklahoma.

On November 27, 2005, Rev Michael Williams accepted the pastorate. Under his leadership we had 12 for baptism, 24 for Christian experience, 1 wedding, and 3 deacons ordained. Rev Williams resigned in July 2012. Rev Clifford Tucker stood in as interim pastor.

On October 21, 2012, Rev Clifford Tucker accepted the call to be pastor. Under his leadership, Rev Terrance Friday was called as the Associate Pastor
